Aortic aneurysm repair is a surgical procedure used to treat an abnormal bulging or dilation in the wall of the aorta—the main artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aneurysms most commonly occur in the abdominal or thoracic sections of the aorta and pose a serious risk if they rupture, leading to life-threatening internal bleeding. Repair is typically recommended when the aneurysm reaches a size where the risk of rupture outweighs the risk of surgery or if it is growing rapidly. Symptoms may be absent until rupture, so early detection through imaging is critical.

There are two main types of aortic aneurysm repair: open surgical repair and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Open surgery involves replacing the weakened section of the aorta with a synthetic graft through a large incision. EVAR, a less invasive option, uses catheters to insert a stent-graft through blood vessels, reinforcing the artery wall from within. The choice of technique depends on the aneurysm’s location, shape, and the patient’s overall health. Both methods aim to prevent rupture, restore normal blood flow, and significantly reduce the risk of complications.
